# Beth Lee Keeps It Honest, Catchy, and a Little Unexpected

For Austin songwriter and musician Beth Lee, songwriting runs in the family. Her dad is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, giving Lee an early connection to the craft that would eventually become a major part of her own life. Since 2008, she has performed live regularly and written her way through an eclectic mix of sounds ranging from Americana and blues to garage rock, punk, alternative, and indie rock.

That range has given Lee plenty of musical territory to explore, but one of the challenges of being a songwriter for so many years is finding ways to keep the work from becoming too familiar.

“I’ve found it difficult to keep things fresh, and to keep from writing the same song over and over,” Lee says.

Her solution is to get outside of her own musical comfort zone. When creative blocks hit, Lee looks for new music, particularly artists and sounds outside the genres she typically writes in. It’s a simple practice, but one that can open the door to different rhythms, structures, ideas, and ways of approaching a song.

That willingness to explore makes sense for an artist whose own musical history refuses to stay neatly inside one genre. Still, no matter where the sound takes her, Lee’s approach to songwriting remains straightforward. Asked to describe her performing and songwriting style, she sums it up in just a few words: “Simple catchy melodies with honest lyrical delivery.”

After years of performing, writing, playing in bands, and moving between genres, Lee continues to come back to what makes a song connect in the first place: a melody that stays with you and lyrics that feel true.
