Austin-based writer and artist Quinn Coleman has always been creative, but the path to becoming an author started somewhere particularly fitting for a storyteller: with a Dungeons & Dragons character.

“I got my start by creating a backstory for a DND character,” Coleman says. “My love for storytelling has only evolved from there.”

Coleman began writing books in 2018 and has since built an impressively varied body of work spanning LGBTQ+ fiction, romance, science fiction, post-apocalyptic stories, horror, and more. Coleman is also entirely self-published, including creating the cover art.

At the center of the work, however, is something consistent: a willingness to write about subjects that aren't always easy to talk about.

“I don't shy away from hard topics,” Coleman says.

Those topics have included addiction and recovery, homophobia, sexual assault, church hurt, heartbreak, PTSD, consent, faith, and healing. Romantic relationships may play a role, but Coleman doesn't necessarily consider the books traditional romances. In her opinion, friendship, family, and found family can carry just as much weight.

That approach is especially visible in *The Masc Narrative*, Coleman's ongoing seven-book series following a group of characters from their late high school years into their early twenties. Four books have been released so far, exploring different experiences with PTSD and recovery alongside first loves, healthy consent, found family, and identity. The latest installment also follows a bisexual character navigating his Christian faith.

Coleman's other published works include *What About After*, an LGBTQ+ story about two former best friends who begin fake dating to help one publicly come out in Hollywood. Beneath that premise are deeper explorations of alcohol abuse, recovery, homophobia, and trauma.

Publishing these stories hasn't always come easily.

## **“The largest challenge I've faced is battling against myself,” Coleman says.**

She explains that it's easy to let worries about marketing, algorithms, or the realities of publishing keep you from moving forward. Instead, Coleman has adopted a simpler rule: if the story matters, publish it.

Readers have reached out to say a book helped them through a parent's divorce or gave them something they needed while healing from postpartum depression. For Coleman, those messages cut through the noise surrounding sales, marketing, and visibility.

“There are people who need to read this,” Coleman says, “and it's not just me.”

Now, she is looking ahead to a busy 2027\. *Point of View*, the next installment in [*The Masc Narrative*](https://quinncoleman.blog/the-masc-narrative/?ref=thenewsboylocal.com), is slated for publication in February, with plans to complete the final three books in the seven-book series next year. And after that...There's already a queue of stories waiting to be told.
