Datura Finds Inspiration in the Mundane

For Datura, the creative process has never been limited to one medium or one stage. The artist, songwriter, and pianist, also known as Jessica Pyrdsa, has been playing piano for longer than she can remember. Raised in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, she eventually found her way to Texas, first to Austin and now to Lockhart, where her creative journey has taken on a new dimension.

After years of performing around Austin and across the country, Datura opened her own art gallery and piano lounge called Nightshade Art Gallery in Lockhart, creating a space for rotating exhibitions, live music, and the kind of artistic community she has spent years being part of.

Music, however, started much earlier. “My mother is a piano teacher, so I began playing piano before I could walk,” she says.

Songwriting came later, during college. Once it did, it stuck. These days, Datura says she can’t imagine going through a day without collecting little pieces of inspiration that might eventually find their way into a song. Often, those ideas come from places other people might overlook.

She describes what keeps her moving through creative blocks simply as “forever being inspired by the mundane.” That perspective fits an artist who works across disciplines. A passing moment, an ordinary interaction, a sound, a room, or a feeling can all become raw material.

Datura says one of her biggest challenges as a singer-songwriter has been resisting the temptation to compare her songs and career to those of other artists. Instead, she tries to appreciate her work for what it is: a creative journey.

When asked about her sound, she put it as, “If Tom Waits and Nina Simone had a love child.”

That combination of grit, soul, piano, and a little unpredictability feels right at home in Lockhart.
